7 Meditations for organ manualiter

Meditation – from the Latin meditatio, “reflection, contemplation” – is, in many cultures, a way of life that leads the human being toward his or her innermost core. In the great religious traditions, including Christianity, the direct experience of the Divine is regarded as the goal of this inward journey. Even the early Christians sought, in their “spiritual exercises,” that stillness in which thought and reason come to rest. The search for this “one primordial ground” is the search for the divine element within every human being, which Christians commonly call the “soul.”

Music can significantly support this path into the inner realm. For centuries, the simple lines of Gregorian chant have carried people into that inner world where sound becomes silence and an encounter with the Divine becomes possible. It is from this spirit that the present music unfolds.

The Seven Meditations for Organ are designed so that each meditation, through its own character and mood, can set different “strings” within the human heart into vibration, without drawing too much attention to the music itself. At the same time, it was important to the composer not merely to create music for meditation, but works of artistic substance, free from banality.

As this edition is arranged for manualiter performance, all pieces can be played on single‑manual instruments. An 8′ foundation stop is sufficient for registration. The tempo should follow a calm, steady pulse. To allow the performer the greatest possible interpretive freedom and to keep the notation clear, articulation marks have been omitted; a legato touch is generally appropriate.

May this music grant moments of stillness, reflection, and inner peace.
